How can I digitize to DV-PAL from original footage shot at 720p25? I cannot go firewire from a Panasonic 1200A deck. All it will let me do is digitize at DVC-PRO HD 720p60. But I want small files for a lengthy offline edit. I am working in fcp 5.04.

Either dub it to DV then capture, Buy a Kona 3 card and downconvert on the fly, or capture full res, and then down convert to offlineHD 25fps… there’s a preset for this.

Thanks! I guess down converting after full rez capture is my least expensive (but most time consuming?) alternative.

I’ll bet it’s as fast as realtime or faster on a dual G5… so not too bad.

The 1200 a deck will do either PAL or NTSC downconvets with the all of the options installed.

the when SYS 030 MENU is set to 0001 the deck will do 25fps frame rates properly
the 023 menus needs to be set to the output format you want to record.

Sorry, but if it’s offlineHD I won’t be able to see it!

I only have SYS menu items 12 through 26. Does that mean the deck is missing an essential component?

Sad but I believe that is true.
you would need to have both the HDSDI and FW boards to be able to do the Down-conversion via FW

Thanks Gary, very clear and helpful, but not good for me this weekend!

The real problem I’ve found, after trying a few different options, is that my original time code references don’t get carried over, so I’m sure how I’ll ever conform after the offline.

On a recent job an editor friend tried to capture downconvert SD DV codec from a Pana 1200 deck. Tape were DVCPro100HD.

It just didn’t work and she was advised by the facility hiring the deck that the downconvert to DV didn’t work in PAL frame rates like 25p. Instead we went HD SDI to Decklink extreme, downconvert to SD in the card and then captured in DV codec. One pass capture, not timecode problems.
