    happy holidays!

quick question- client and I are editing in FCP 5.1 on g5. we have footage shot on DVCam and are using a DSR-20 deck via firewire. The software isn’t letting me capture using the DV50 codec, only the DV NTSC one. IS this normal? Am I missing something? An explanation would be nice.

That and the deck you are using is a DVCAM deck, not a DVCPRO 50 deck.

But like Dave said, if it is DV25, then you cannot capture as DV50 without a capture card.

    Thanks for the response,

So let me ask (and yes, humor me like a kindegardner)-

If you shoot on mini dv, it’s recorded as DV25. Correct?

If you shoot on DVCAM it can be recorded as DV25 only or can a setting in the camera allow to shoot at DV50?

Can you play a MiniDV tape shot in DV25 thru a DVCPro50 deck and capture DV50?

sorry of rthe silly questions. Thanks for your help!

[Rick Neely] “If you shoot on DVCAM it can be recorded as DV25 only or can a setting in the camera allow to shoot at DV50?”

No. Only a DVCPRO 50 camera can shoot DV50. That and the HVX-200. DVCAM is the same format as miniDV (DV25) only it moves thru the camera/deck faster to lessen the occurances of dropout.

[Rick Neely] “Can you play a MiniDV tape shot in DV25 thru a DVCPro50 deck and capture DV50? “

Only if you had a capture card. But again, you gain nothing in capturing as DV50. The DV compression has already occurred.
