DV NTSC 4:1:1 to 4:2:0 color sampling
Hi all,
I encode a lot of DV NTSC video for the web. I’ve been told that the best way to improve DV NTSC color sampling (4:1:1) for the web (4:2:0) is to render it using a (4:2:2) codec like MotionJPEG and DV50. I use Premiere Pro 1.5 and Final Cut Pro to capture, is there a way to change the color sampling of DV NTSC upon capturing? Or is there a compression software that will adjust the color sampling before encoding?

The preprocessing and color adjusting done by apps like Compression Master and ProCoder is very good. So good, that for web video output, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

And rerendering from 4:1:1 to 4:2:0 doesn’t help. What does help is to render from an NLE as 4:2:2 when using 4:1:1 source, so all effects, motion graphics, titles, etcetera get rendered as full resolution.
DV25 should only be treated as an acquisition format, not a post format.
