I’m fairly certain that it doesn’t matter, but before I go ahead and online a project can anyone confirm for me that there is no difference using 9pin control or a firwire cable for machine control out of a Sony J30 deck into a BMC in FCP.
I’m obviously taking it in via SDI but just for machine control if it works it works right?

No little gremlins or downsides that I should be aware of?

I’m being overly cautious I’m sure, but just checking! (Just that I’ve realised I haven’t got a 9pin lying about..doh!)

    cheers

    Hi,

Your deck supports RS-422 device control and all DeckLink cards and Multibridge PCIe hardware also support RS-422 device control. We perform all of our accuracy testing using RS-422 device control and not with Firewire.

However if you have some reason for using Firewire device control, then it should work fine but obviously we haven’t tested that scenario for accuracy. You will need to modify the presets in Final Cut Pro to use Firewire device control rather than Sony RS-422.

Firewire should work fine but an RS-422 cable would be preferable, particularly as you can run it over long distances unlike Firewire. If the deck is close to you, then that will not cause a problem.

Thanks for your response Luke. Much appreciated.
Mmm. Maybe I wont take that chance. Although I did take in my rushes via firewire at DV quality. So hopefully my problems are not already in the system, so to speak.
That said the deck is right beside the the box. Its only a metre long firewire cable. So all should be well.

    But good to know.

    Thanks again.

    cheers

Just throwing my two cents in. I once tried a similar procedure to what you’re describing with DVCProHD, with a Kona2 card. I found that with that codec, firewire wasn’t exactly frame accurate. If I captured the same clips twice, it would not be exactly the same 100% of the time. It was always within a few frames, but it was definately off.
Additionally, as we had the 1800A deck (with firewire and 422 control), i tried using 422 for deck control and firewire for input, and found that that was even farther off, presumably due to processing time in the firewire.

I would proceed with caution if you want to start mixing and matching firewire and 422.

    Good luck!

    Craig
