  • DV Keying problem when using BCC filters – getting a video studder with movement

Posted by Kate Marquis on December 7, 2006 at 7:49 pm

    First, I’m using a Dual 2.7 GHz G5 and fcp 5.0.4.
I’m editing in 8 bit uncompressed with a Kona card.

I’m keying a piece shot in DV. I can actually get a wonderful, beautiful key using a combo of the Boris BCC Chroma Key filter and the BCC Matte Choker along with the Mask Feather. Love it!

Except for one piece. When I use the two BCC filters together in the same clip I get a studder or stagger in anything that has a quick motion. For instance, I have to guys sitting down and interviewing eachother. The key is great around their bodies – which are relatively still… however, when they get talking and their hands move – their hands have a tendency to studder a bit. Now if their hands are moving in front of their body – the studder/stagger does not occur. It just occurs when the hands are keyed and moving.

If I only use one of the filters, this does not occur. It’s only when I use both of the BCC filters together.
I’ve really worked on trying to get a good clean key using regular fcp filters – but I just can’t get the same perfection as with the BCC filters together.

I’m using an 8 bit uncompressed timeline, however, I’ve also tried it using a DV timeline with the clip taken in DV firewire to see if that made a difference with the filters – it didn’t. I still got the staggers!

    Any thoughts on this…

    Thanks,
    Kate

    Kate,

Don’t have an answer for what you’re using now, but I have what may provide a viable alternative.

    https://www.dvgarage.com/prod/prod.php?prod=conduit15

Conduit is node based, but pretty easy to grasp, but what to look for is the demo movie on keying DV footage with it, here:

It is remarkable, and comes from the same folks who brought us DVmattePro. (not a bad answer for you either!)

BTW the subject in their demo is a talking head who shakes her hands in the shot, so it should be just what you need.

Good to know… if I can’t find a good solution to this, then I am going to look into other options like this.

    Thanks!
