May 17, 2005 at 1:06 amHi Steve,
Simply use “Blackmagic NTSC/PAL – DV” easy setup in Final Cut Pro HD. That will capture the video from the SDI outputs of your deck to DV. You’ll need to G5 do to do this.

May 17, 2005 at 12:27 pmBut no DV deck outputs native DV over SDI. They output uncompressed video over SDI, which, if you were to capture via SDI and then compress to the DV codec, would leave you a generation down before you began. If you capture DV over SDI and leave it uncompressed, you’re not loosing anything.
Sony did make a DVCAM deck with SDTI which allowed it to transmit the native DV compressed signal, but you needed a proprietary edit system to access it. It was designed so that you could injest at 4 times speed.
If you want native DV as DV on your system, avoid the SDI route and get a deck with firewire. Or keep it uncompressed.

May 18, 2005 at 8:13 pmThe advantage to importing over firewire is very evident if the footage was shot with Advanced Pulldown. You can remove Advanced Pulldown upon import into Final Cut.
I believe you can still remove it after capture, but the files stay the same physical size at 29.97, the pulldown frames just aren’t displayed.

May 19, 2005 at 1:54 amThanks for the info on workflow and pulldown. I am guessing there’s no quality reason, though, for capturing via SDI over FW if it’s still DV25?
Thanks in advance,
peter
