  • DV Firewire removes interlacing on import?

I’ve had to capture some older Sony Hi-8 tapes so I grabbed an old Sony camcorder with firewire out and started loading in through FCP 7 with DV Firewire settings. I changed to codec to be ProRes 422 with interlacing checked and lower fields first so that it match the rest of the footage I already have. It loads in fine but I noticed that the footage has been deinterlaced.

So I hooked up the camera to a Kona card (s-video and analog audio) and captured to the same settings, ProRes 422, interlaced checked and lower field first. This footage was interlaced, as expected.

Why is going through firewire deinterlacing? Never noticed this with Mini-DV before. Is it the camera? (no settings to change it on the cam if it is) Or is this normal behavior that I have missed over the years?

    Hi Tony,
    Must be something wrong somewhere.
There is no de-interlacing going on when you capture DV through FW.

    How you see that?

When paused in the canvas you don’t see the two fields like usual, just a single frame like all progressive footage. I even captured the footage through the composite input to bypass firewire to get the interlacing in the footage. Then I threw the deinterlace filter on that clip and it looked exactly like the DV/firewire clip without any filters on it. Weird. =)

To be honest, I’d rather have it deinterlaced for the project I am doing but just wanted to share my thoughts as I have never noticed this before. Thanks for responding, too.

That you don’t have this “effect” on YOUR screen doesn’t means that the stuff is Progressive or has been de-interlaced. This may depend on the monitor, the canvas size (is at 100%), the movement in the picture..
If you don’t have an interlaced monitor you need an application that allows to step field-by-field (AE, Shake,..). If there is no difference between fields, the footage s progressive.
