DV Compression issues
Hey,
I’m not sure what the best way to go about this, to preserve the best quality.
I edit my projects shot on DVX100 24PAdvanced in FCP in the native Firewire DV Codec. When I’m
finished with the project, I lay it down to a Digibeta at 720 X 486,
using the AJA card but there’s some slight distortion going on. Very
minimal. Is it better to export out my sequence at the DV codec as a self contained quicktime?
Is there a loss of quality doing that? I know theoretically, there
shouldn’t be a loss in quality, but I feel like something is getting
slightly compressed again. Am unsure what the exact process is when
creating that quicktime. Also is there a better way? Mini -dv via
firewire, but isn’t that also compressing my project slightly? Thanks

Hi Chuck,
It’s my understanding that Final Cut Pro will not recompress images on output when you use File > Export > Quicktime movie UNLESS there is something within that specific clip that Final Cut needs to render. Obviously, when it renders due to an effect, a filter, or titles/graphics, it’s going to have to render and that would add a second generation of compression to the video. If, however, most of your video is straight cuts then no recompression happens unless you check the box “Recompress all frames” – but there’s no need for you to check that box.
What I’m saying only applies if you’re using the File > Export > Quicktime movie (not Quicktime conversion) and if you’re exporting to the same format that you captured in and that your timeline is in – in this case DV25.
