DV captured video is blurry
I am trying to load DV footage via Firewire into FCP 5.1.4 and all of the video, including the color bars, appears a little bit blurry when I import it. It looks fine on a video monitor connected to the deck, so it is not a problem with the footage on the tape. I am using a rented Sony DSR-1500A to load my miniDV footage into my PowerMac G5. Is there a setting that I need to change in FCP or on the deck, or is this the way all DV footage looks when imported into FCP and will it look OK when I export it? (This is my first time loading my own footage from a deck.)

Video can only be judged on external video monitors. Anything you see on the computer screen is suspect.
Play it back from the computer over firewire to the deck and watch the video output from the deck. I bet it will look the same as the original tape does.

I have not had this problem before when inputting video via other methods. Here is a link to see what the video looks like. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, my deliverable is a digital file, so I need it to look clear on a computer.

What does the playback look like when viewed from FCP via FW and thru your deck/camcorder?

This is a very common misunderstanding. Bottom line: You must trust your external video monitor OR work with the Canvas at 100% magnification.
Your external monitor WILL show you what your final output will be when you export, the Canvas will not if it is in “Fit To Window” magnification.
If this still bugs you:
1. Put your Canvas at 100% and see how it looks then. Unless the Canvas is in 100%, it will not reveal the final quality.2. Also, when you make your exported QT, also make sure to enable “high quality playback” in the “Show Movie Properties” dialog (Apple + J in Quicktime Player). Check it in the “Video” category of the dialog.
