  • DV capture with various capture settings…

Posted by Rj Miles on October 12, 2006 at 3:40 am

I have been experimenting with various capture setups while grabbing DV from a Sony camera, with the end goal being a progressive friendly clip.

    DV NTSC 720×480
    P-Jpeg 720×540 90-100%
    Apple Intermediate Codec at 720p (920×720) & 1080i (1440×1080)

So far, when looking closely at frame resolution and interlace artifacts, the p-jpeg and Apple Intermediate 720p look the best.

I am wondering… these two capture settings do not appear to be throwing our (1) field “bob”, but rather seem to be either field blending or doing adaptive deinterlacing.

I wonder if anyone can comment on how the interlaced DV source signal is being handled so nicely by these two codecs?

May I note, when capturing DV using the Apple Intermediate Codec advanced setting at 720p & 1080i, the movie ends up 960×720 and 1440×1080 respectively.

I have not yet tried to deinterlace the DV footage captured at 8/10 bit uncompressed through either the DV connection, Y/V or component, but I will deinterlace those clips in Cleaner to see if I can get something that looks better than the P-jpeg or Apple Intermediate 720p codec.

Please feel free to point me to some links on DV interlaced -> progressive workflows.

    cheers

    RJ
