DV capture RAPID, crazy, unuseable
Wondering if anyone has experienced this — it’s driving me nuts.
I’ll be digitizing onto my G5 dual 1.8 with FCP 6.0.4 using either my HC3 camcorder or a stand alone JVC deck. Everything looks fine, footage appearing on my screen, reaches end of tape, notifies me, I click okay. I think I’ve got it all.
But when I play it back…somewhere in there (usually it’s a long capture, 30 minutes to an hour, and the first half is fine) somewhere will come a point where suddenly the video speeds up, it looks and sounds as if I were fast forwarding about twice normal speed, the audio’s there but full of digital hiccups and it’s all basically unuseable.
When this happens I shut everything down, restart, and things are fine. But it’s quite frustrating.
Since I’m not in the habit of viewing every single piece of media right after I digitize it, I often don’t realize I have a problem until I’m deep into my edit. On this last one, I caught the warning sign that one of my tapes — an hour long tape — had been captured into a Quicktime that was 42 minutes long. So there’s the ratio — it’s about 143% normal speed.
I won’t even go into the ballet I need to orchestrate just to get my computers to recognize my decks for digitizing (plug in, unplug, plug in, check settings, restart, replug, unplug, repeat til furious) or even the struggle to print the finished DVD on an Epson R200 (tray in, tray out, restart, DVD slot flipped up, flipped down, restart print job, push slightly, cancel job, restart). Perhaps it’s just a fantasy, but I thought if I paid thousands of dollars I would get something that operated even remotely like it’s supposedly designed to. Yeah, I know, but one can dream.
Thanks for any help!
