DV Capture—>Export
Hi, I just have a little question. I don’t really have problems with encoding but, I was asking: I almost always capture in FCP with DV/DVCPRO NTSC since I use a DVCAM Player. I thought that File->Export->Quicktime Movie was useful when capturing/editing/export without render needed to keep the footage at the same quality without re-encoding. But I didn’t thought that exporting the same DV footage with another codec (ie. Animation or None) would give me a better quality image. So why, i.e., the small blurred text (DV) becomes clearer when I export (Animation or None) ?

It doesn’t really, you are just perceiving it that way because by default, QT displays DV at a low resolution. If you go into the DV movie’s properties in QT, you can change it to a high quality display, and they should match.
On the otherhand, if you shoot DV, but then edit it an Uncompressed timeline, your final titles will look better, because when you import the titles, there is no compression on them, versus DV’s very high compression. As has been said many times before here, “DV25 should only be treated as an acquisition format, not a post format”.

True, I forgot that QT was playing DV in LQ by default, thanks. If I remember, DV has a 5:1 ratio and its awful for edges and thin text, that’s why I always use None to export. Does it matter if I edit in a DV sequence in FCP but without rendering, and then export as Uncompressed ? Or should I use, ie. Animation, to edit, instead of DV ?

If you export from FCP and want to keep it native to the Sequence settings, then always select Export Quicktime Movie-Make Self Contained checked. This way makes an exact duplicate of what is in FCP. If you use the Export using Quicktime Conversion, even if you select the DV codec, you will get a compression hit. Try it. Export a clip using Conversion, import that movie and export it again, import that new movie and do it again…about 4 or 5 times should be enough. Now do the same thing with Export QT Movie-Make Self Contained and repeat 4-5 times. The last conversion clip will be way desaturated…the self contained exports will be a clone of the original.
Now, exporting to the Animation codec is simply promoting your clip to 4:2:2 colorspace and it may only look better because QT can display it better. The High Quality switch does work, but you should always export Movie and choose Self contained if you want a clone of the clip.
