Dust Busting options?
Hey guys,
I am looking for a real time option for dust busting entire films in an uncompressed Quicktime format. I have been using an Avid DS and manually painting out each speck of dust in the footage. I am not looking for an automated option. I am looking for quality and prefer going frame by frame but need a relatively quick process. Hopefully there’s a software option out there. We are in the process of phasing out the Avid DS but we will still be using Final Cut Pro, Avid Express Pro and Avid Media Composer. Maybe there’s a plugin that will allow us to do this or maybe a stand alone program. Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions.

Autodesk Combustion has powerful vector-based paint tools for dustbusting, and it’s cross-platform.

Another useful tool is Automatic Duck’s Pro Import Cmb. It will allow you to export an FCP sequence directly to Combustion, keeping all layers and effects intact in the composite’s timeline.

thanks for the suggestions but I am looking for a manual option. I don’t want to leave this up to a program or plugin to hopefully clean up the dust. as for the option using automatic duck… we have automatic duck but we do not have autodesk’s combustion. is it real time or is it like after effects? i have after effects cs3 right now. basically what i need is the ability to watch the film in realtime and then stop it when i see dust or a scratch and then fix the scratch with in a matter of seconds. this is the nice part about the avid ds but we are phasing it out so continuing in the same way is not an option. thanks again guys.

It’s RAM-based playback like AE. You might also check out Apple’s Motion, which has paint tools as well. Motion may have better playback performance as it’s heavily dependent on the graphics card for realtime performance.

I’ve just finished restoring 14 hours of old movies, and did a lot manual. For that i’ve written a small application that let you view your footage in RT from within Photoshop, and get frames in and out the QT with a single keystroke. When you hit the key to get a frame in Photoshop, you also get the previous or next frame with it.
Working is non-destructive (the app. autosenses the codec, and puts the restored frames in a separate QT track, it also has an option to save the restored frame as PSD so you can step back on your corrections.
The downside of working non-destructive that you need quite a heavy machine to watch the layered QT. I’ve been thinking about adding a render option that renders a preview in a third layer, but in practice we never needed it. Just the part of seeing problems in RT (is it dust, or a sparrow, is it a burn, or is it a distant flashing light?) and fixing them fast was our goal.It relies (for a part) on Photoshop actions, and it is windows only for the moment.
