dust and scratches effect
Greetings to all!!!
I am new to the cow and this is my first post. I am trying to stylize some footage and want to give it that “old film” effect that creates random scratches all over the frame as the video plays. How do I do this in AE? Thanx in advance for your help.

Q? As in just the let…oh nevermind. lol
Well there are all sorts of old film plug-ins floatng around, but with a little elbow grease you can do it with the built in tools. For the crud and lines, Maybe use the paint tools to add some white blemishes and scratch lines randomly over maybe a range of 15 frames or so. Then render this out to a clip. Re-import and set it to loop. Use this as a luma matte to lay some dark noisy footage over your video so that it looks like scratchy garbage. Then on the whole thing, add ‘the wiggler’ to the opacity of your layer set to a frequency of 24 (to be like a an old 24fps projector fluttering). Then add some noise. Finally some curves. On the curves raise the low end of the red channel up so the blacks go red. It’s really ugly and makes the film look very aged. Also take the gamma of the green channel and bump it up. In the RGB channel, clip the whites and crush the blacks to give it the bad latitude of old reversal stock. Then to top it off, create a mask around the edges of the video to darken the edges so it’s like a projector once again that has an image with a brighter center and darker edges.
That should get you started.

Also there’s a quicktime plugin that does this as well.
Or you can buy the Artbeats Film Clutter volume 1 or 2 and overlay some of it over your footage.
Or you could mix and match all of them together!
