  • Dumb Question – Adding Text to multi-camera shoot

Posted by Janet Turner on May 2, 2009 at 11:42 pm

    Hi gurus –

I have a two camera shoot that I am editing in Vegas 8. What I want to appear at the bottom of my video under the picture of the person on the video is their name. I know how to do this with a one camera shoot because I can just add a separate title track above the video track and add the text but how do I do this in a two camera shoot? Do I have to render out an avi file of this one scene and add it back in? I hope not – I’m confused enough!

I’m in the process of editing now so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did a 4-camera shoot/edit recently and waited until the multi-cam edit was finished before I started to add any titles.
This way, you’re concentrating on the edit first.

    Mike –

Thank you for responding. How did you add the titles once the multicam shoot was finished and cut? I tried adding the titles above the master track but all I got was a black frame over the video. I am using Ultimate S if that is any help.

Janet, after the edit was done (using the multicam tool in Vegas Pro 8), I created a new track on top of the master track & dragged a new text event on it.
Make sure you use the Default Text option as it has the alpha channel built into it already.
I don’t use Ultimate S so, if there’s a finishing step that I’m not aware of, someone else will have to chime in here.

Nothing special. Vegas always sees the higher tracks first. Adding a title above the master track should work fine as long as the media you add has an alpha channel.

If you have Ultimate S3 or 4 you could also use the Lower Thirds tab to also add a background behind the name.

    Hi John –

I tried putting a transparent text background above the master track but it came up black above the video. I verified the settings were correct and even tried a trial render. Sure enough, I had the video, a black text frame and then back to the video. I’ll try again. I like the idea of the lower thirds maybe I’ll try that one as well. Thank you for responding to my post.
