  • Dubbing DVCPRO HD to HDCAM

I shot a gig recently in DVCPRO HD, (HDX900, 1080 24), understanding of course that the camera is recording 24P over 60i. It’s come to pass that the editor requires an HDCAM version of the footage at 23.98. Has anyone made this dub between DVCPROHD and HDCAM? Any issues with this, or is it just a matter of setting the HDCAM deck to 23.98 instead of 60i? My instincts tell me that this should work, but I can’t always trust those instincts.

Bad instinct, will not work. The only way I could imagine making this work is import to 24 timeline using best codec available (ProRes on FCP) and them exporting to HDCAM deck. This is the only way to pull the “A” frames out of the DVCRO100; no deck will do this.

Thanks for the quick response. So much for my instincts.

Supposedly, the AJ-HD1800 DVCProHD deck will output a 1080/24P signal from those tapes.

I found two apparent success stories here:
    https://community.avid.com/forums/t/68627.aspx

I found panasonic documentation of it here:
    https://www.dmcc.co.kr/data/HD_digital/HD/vcr/aj-hd1800/AJ-HD1800.pdf
    (yes, a Korean dealer website)

Strangely, the regular Panasonic website as well as the operating instructions make no mention of this. (I had run across this previously and am still trying for definitive confirmation.)

I stand corrected. Good luck finding one of these decks.

The ubiquitous AJ-HD1400 deck will do this for you. Switch menu item 25 (SYSTEM
FREQ) to 0002 23/24. This will output 23.98psf over HD-SDI. It works with regular and advanced pulldown from the HDX900.
