Dual Xeon E5-2620 v2 or i7-4930K
Hi, I’m going to be building a new editing/compositing PC, and I have a question. I’m going to be using Media Composer with Boris Red and possibly Premiere Pro with After Effects.
My Question:
Should I purchase and use two Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2 processors or an Intel i7-4930K processor? Both use the 2011 socket, have 6 cores, and are at about the same price range. However, the Xeons’ clock speeds are 2.1-2.6, and the i7’s clock speed is 3.4-3.9. But, if I use two Xeons, I can get 12 more threads. I’ve searched many other forums, and many people seem to prefer the i7, but I wanted to see what you all think.
What should I do?

Do not get any CPU under 2.6GHz for realtime editing applications. The latency of the processing for media is to high to handle realtime playback well. I would suggest the I7 6 Core versus the Dual Xeons with the applications you mention especially considering the Xeons being considered. If you want a Xeon then make sure the clock speed is over 2.6Ghz and preferably 3Ghz and above.
