  • Dual Boot Necessary for AVID/FCP system?

Posted by Dukenuk12 on November 9, 2007 at 9:45 pm

I just got a macPRO here at my office and i am transferring all of my files from my old G5 which was a dual boot system for AVID and FCP on separate boot partitions. My questions is “Is this necessary? I can’t think of any reason why it shouldn’t work fine on a single partition but let me know your thoughts. I dont want to transfer an ungodly amount of data from one system to the other only to learn that i should have set up a separate partition before doing so. Thanks so much!

Dual boot is the way to go. The Avid codecs have caused issues with a lot of FCP systems in the past. Best to keep the two systems separated.

really? could that be the cause of my problem?

i have a macbook pro which i use to run both FCP 5.1 and AVID XPress 5.7. While FCP is working quite well AVID is a bit sluggish, not responding to command clicks in real time (i’ve posted this issue on the AVID forums but did not get an answer).

I have a dual boot system and it’s working fine:
    Quad G5, OS 10.4.9 or 10.4.10?, QT 7.2, FCP 6.01, MCSoft 2.7.3

However I suspect it’s only a matter of time before I’ll want to upgrade the OS to a version that will help with FCP but won’t work with Avid. I figure I’ll go dual boot when I have to, but for now I don’t.

Sorry to get to this late. I hope the Duke is subscribed to this thread….

I don’t have the latest version of FCP installed, but I had the one from two years ago running on the same machine with both Xpress Pro and Media Composer software for a living. I didn’t see any issues with them both open at the same time, either.

Avid was a Mac-only company for its first ten years, and there are hundreds of them around in product management, design and engineering. I’m willing to wager that FCP was on 75% on them, and this is the first time I’ve heard anyone mention a dual boot system.

I’ll test again when I get around to installing the new FCS (I know, I know, hardly new anymore), but I swear this is the first time I’ve ever heard of any issues.
