  • DSR-45: does it do both NTSC and PAL?

Posted by Ron James on November 2, 2006 at 8:27 pm

Can anyone confirm for me (and I did a search for this, btw) whether or not the Sony DSR-45 DVCAM deck can record and playback both NTSC and PAL?

I’ll be using one purchased in Canada and would like to know if I’ll be able to do a PAL dub on it from FCP?

    Thanks!

    DSR-45A is NTSC ONLY
    DSR-45AP is PAL ONLY

The DSR-11 does PAL and NTSC

I’m not sure exactly how you want to use the deck, but be aware if you get the DSR-11…it will record PAL from a PAL timeline or it will record NTSC from an NTSC timeline. It will NOT convert the video for you. If you’re trying to change it from one format to the other you need to get a plugin for Final Cut or a program that will convert it within the computer before you output it.

I have a DSR-45 and had to deal with a PAL issue awhile ago.

It plays Pal in your monitor window, but won’t export through firewire. I was able to capture through my AJA IO-LA, but I think only through the monitor out, which is the RCA plug.

It wasn’t a very important project, but it was kind of hack way of getting the video out.

Are you sure? The DSR-11 could play PAL video out via Firewire. Just had to flip that NTSC-PAL switch in the back, Power the deck Off / On, and then it was good to go.

Nevermind, I see the answer is already posted up above. DSR-45 has two versions. Oh well, pay more, get less features!

    Thanks everyone,

I need to go from a PAL timeline to a DVCAM tape. I keep hearing that the DSR-40 and 45 decks can do this, thought it’s an unadvertised feature. I’ve never personally tried it, though.

This is a UK site, but I was just doing a quick search to provide an example. This FAQ mentions that “for DV, there are three of the Sony Professional DVCAM decks that can playback and record at SP speed on DV and miniDV tapes in both PAL and NTSC. These units are the DSR-11, DSR-25 and DSR-45.”

I’ll have to try it out and see, I guess.

Dang, it can playback PAL, but not record it. Crap. Just tried.

Jeff, a DSR-11 will definitely record PAL, though, from an FCP PAL timeline? I’ve got the conversion under control, just need something to dump to.

    Thanks!

The DSR-45A is a new version!

Bottom line, DSR-11 is what you want. Just remember, it does not convert PAL>NTSC. That you will need Nattress Plug-in (excellent plug-in Recommended Buy! You can’t beat the price on ALL his plug-ins) or use Compressor.
