April 29, 2005 at 4:05 amWhat is this? Are they really still introducing DVCAM products? Isn’t this the year that everything moves over to HDV and HD? Can someone explain why they’re introducing this camera? It seems odd too that it supports 2/3″ lenses when the DSR series of cameras has always supported 1/2″.

April 29, 2005 at 8:46 pmThe DSR 400 is a 4:3 standard def DVCam.
By the way, 2/3″ CCDs are a step up from 1/2″ CCDs.
And people will be shooting 4:3 standard Def video for years to come. -

April 29, 2005 at 9:00 pmDavid, I know the 2/3″ chips are better. I guess this cam is more of a cousin to the dsr-500 rather than the dsr-300. But even the 500 does 16:9 and this one doesn’t.
What do you mean standard 4:3 will be around for a long time? Isn’t everyone moving to 16:9 and aren’t the tv stations required to switch over within the next year or two? Last year, I went to DV Magazine’s trade show in Los Angeles and at the Sony booth a fellow said to me that all of the DSR cams will soon be discontinued. That’s why I’m surprised to see this camera introduced.

They released a 16:9 model as well.

I guess you might want to read up a little about DTV.

May 2, 2005 at 1:16 pmperhaps the rave is more focused on the the dsr 400k, the 16:9 24P/30P DVCAM camera.I think it is sony’s answer to “Progressive” since is a hot item these days, and their only other camera that can do that is their top of the line 1080 cam.
It is probably a good alternative to those who like Panasonic’s SDX-900 camera which also does 24 in standard def. Obvious differences are that sony’s DVCAM is DV25, and DVCPRO50 is DV50.
And also the price is about half of Panasonics camera about 29k compared to sony’s 14k. I could see a lot of people buying this camera since it is “inexpensive” especially if it does come with the lens, which im pretty sure it does.
Simply put, it is Sony’s response to the growing demamnd of people wanting to shoot film-like videos. I’d get one if they made this 3 years ago.
