  • DSR-200 stereo audio captures as mono… sometimes.

Posted by David Owen on November 16, 2006 at 8:09 pm

This one’s a mystery to me. Using an old Sony DSR-200, I shot footage typically using my left channel as wireless lav and right channel as an ambient mic… worked fine… captured fine. Then, set two people for an interview with lavs, one left, the other right. Recorded on the camera fine. That is, I’ve listened to the stereo tracks with headphones directly from the camera and both tracks are there as expected. HOWEVER, when attempting to capture this interview in PPro2, I get a mono clip with only the left channel!

Other clips captured (during the same batch capture) with both channels (stereo) fully intact. Any ideas?

    More info…

I attached the same camera to another computer (via firewire in both cases) and captured the same interview using Windows Media Encoder… resulted in a stereo file containing only the left channel. Footage before and after the interview contain normal stereo channels. Could this be some sort of phase issue that causes problems for the camera to output over fw? Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrgh!

Can’t really think of the issue here, but if you are in a hurry, I would give Scenalyzer a shot. It has resolved most of the issues I’ve had with capture in other software.

The trial version does watermark the video, but since you only need the audio that shouldn’t be a problem for now…

    Vince,

Thanks for the idea… I bought Scenealyzer years ago when Premiere didn’t have scene detection capability yet. I have a suspicion that it may be a camera issue rather than capture issue… Since capture via firewire has dropped one of my channels, yet it IS on the tape, I may just manually capture that one clip via analog inputs. What a stinkin’ pain.

Okay… maybe I’ll win the award for the guy who replies the most to his own posts…

I’ve figured out that the issue must lie in the OHCI FW card or the OS (WinXP). I still have my DVStorm card in the system, (Adobe evidently refuses to work with Canopus on a driver or vice versa, so I relented to capturing via OHCI card) so I tested a partial capture using the very basic Storm Video app… both channels came over fine.

Taking the advice of Vince, I went online and downloaded the latest Scenalyzer trial version. As a prior owner of Scenalyzer (back in 2002), I had received a key to the software which is still valid… what a great company! Now, all is working beautifully via Scenalyzer and DVStorm. Not quite as perfect as working within Premiere Pro 2, but then again that may be asking a bit much. }8>o

    Thanks again, Vince!
