    Hi All

Im looking to buy a SONY DSR-11 or DSR-30p to digitise tape for on-air/broadcast use.
    Typically for on-air promo use.

Specifically i want to firewire either machine to my Powermac G5 and utilise FCP.

    My questions:
Are either of these machines better than the other?
Are there any known issues to be aware of?
Do they simply firewire to the computer without any other hardware requirements?
Is one faster or more easy to use than the other?

    System: 2×1.25Ghz Powermac G5, 2.5Gb RAM | Bluetooth | Airport Extreme |
OS: Tiger OS X.4.6 with latest Quicktime and system updates.
    Edit: FCP 5
    View: Single 21in SGI monitor
    Standard graphics card.

have just found the creative cow! very impressed at the knowledge level so i thought id put it out there. I would aappreciate the thoughts of those who know. Apologise in advance if this isn’t the correct forum.

    kind regards

We’ve had our DSR-11 going on almost three years now. Solid machine with no issues so far.

or you could get the new Sony HVR-M15
does not have the track record of the DSR-11
    but has HDV & DVCAM

If you are looking to use firewire, be prepared that you will be working in a dv codec. You can use FCP to render out an uncompressed sequence to get you to a more receptive environment to color correct in a higher sampled color space if that is of interest to you. The alternative is to get a capture card, such as the Kona LS standard definition card, that will allow input from uncompressed sources, such as a dv deck that has SDI or analog component on board (of which the DSR-11 does not have, not sure about the 30p). This will not yield automatically better results, but will get you chroma smoothed to a higher color space (4:2:2). There are other software utilities to get you to 4:2:2 such a Graeme Nattresses chroma smoother, but this is only worth it if you are going to be able to lay off to a tape format that supports 4:2:2 which then comes back to a capture card. I know you said that you are preparing on air promos, but what color space do you want to work in, are you doing the online yourself, and is dv sufficient for your needs? If dv is good enough, than the DSR-11 is well received.

DSR-30 has same in/out as DSR-11 (firewire, composite, S-Video). It’s a solid workhorse, much larger footprint and DVCAM only whereas DSR-11 does NTSC/PAL and DV/DVCAM.
