DSLR transcode/conversion fun
This should be fun for you guys,
I am going to shoot a short doc on Canon T1i (boss made the choice after no on the 7D) Since as far as I know the T1i does not shoot video at 24p, I want to convert my footage from 30 to 24p in FCS (philip bloom method) after transcoding initially in Mpeg streamclip (ProRes422), then going to dvd through Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. Will my final dvd output be ok (using correct bit rate settings) despite all of the conversions?

What’s your goal?
Are you doing this based on the belief that the look of material shot at 24 FPS is just a matter changing the frame rate?

We are showing it to Fox Sports and some NFL people (sports related) and I wanted it to mimic film more than video, as I plan to take a specific approach to it that will benefit from the conversion. More on the atmosphere and mood, less on the talking heads kinda doc.

The folks at FOX sports don’t care what framerate you present. I was a staff editor and we never discussed the framerate of anything that was ever submitted to us. And, the so-called filmlook is not automatically applied by changing the framerate. Proper color grading is what adds the filmlook after the fact.

Wonder why you would do this? Fox Sports don’t show film they show video, plus a slower frame rate isn’t the best option for sports action.

Yeah man sports at 24P is gonna = strobing and motion blur galore.
Shoot it at 60i, everyone expects sports footage to look like that anyway.

Thanks for all the responses guys, very much appreciated! To answer the questions regarding the frame rate and Fox Sports, the idea was initially based upon the fact we won’t be shooting a whole lot of action, rather a piece on the players, culture, college life, and even a bit on the university itself, with focus on the JC transfers and how they fit in. It will not be a film with a wealth of action on the field.
I really appreciate the input, and we will probably not be using the DSLR (most likely one of the Sony HVRs,meh). Thanks again.
