dropping frames all over the place…
Hey…
ive had this problem for a while and can’t seem to pinpoint where its coming from…
i have a dual 2ghz G5 with 2.5 ram
running final cut 4.5
with an AJA Kona2
format: panasonic 720p59.94i can no longer edit b/c i cannot playback without dropping frmaes constantly.
the cursor will litterally stop in the sequence but the audio will continue and when i stop playback, the cursor updates to the new frame.
ive checked all my settings, my sequence settings and system settings.
it wasn’t always like this. ive changed nothing.
in my viewer window, its the same. no playback. just audio and a still frame.
needless to say i cannot edit like this.i can only playback in my sequence if i preroll with empty space in front of each cut. its a huge pain!!!
also…
i have a problem where i have”media offline” on my clips when its not offline.
i will close the sequence and open it again and it will soemtimes be back online and sometimes it will still say “offline”however, despite this, the media is there, so its not a big issue. although its hard now to determine what is online and what isn’t.
my guess is that the Kona cant handle the load any more. None of this is new material. it all used to play flawlessly.
do i need a new driver?
ive got a dealine now, so any advice will help a lot!

PS i tried lowering to low quality and in safe mode. ive even sized my windows to display at 25% and still the same problem

This has nothing to do with the Kona and everything to do with your media throughput from the hard drives.
What drives are you running, how are they connected, how full are they and when was the last time you cleaned them off?

I’m not a MAC person but the drives seem to be the issue not the Kona.
In addition, check your cabels (to the drives).
The online, offline is a good indication that somethings a bit wrong here, kinda the same as if your network cuts in/out.

i am not at the studio right now.
my deadline isn’t till the end of the month, so i’m okay…
however, i forget the internal drives, as ive never used them.
i’m running off a G-RAID.
750 GB (striped)
there is roughly 450GB left.
its mostly clean. i don’t have lots of superfluous footage in there.
its never bottleneck-ed before.
maybe its the G-RAID your saying?

When was the last time you erased and re-initialized it? A fragmented drive will cause a lot of playback issues.
How do you manage your media? Do you let FCP create all the media folders for you or do you try to manage the media yourself by creating multiple folders for all your projects? If you try to create a lot of your own folders for each project, that can cause playback issues.
Is your system all set up for DVCPro HD correctly? That is you have all your Audio and Video settings set correctly for this format?

you have not stated what compression ratio (or what easy setup) you have selected. With the G-Raid, you should have no issues doing DVCProHD, however, you CANNOT do uncompressed HD – either 8 or 10 bit. Are you trying to use DVCProHD compression ? What did you select in your Audio/Video settings, or Easy Setup menu ?Bob Zelin
