You can cut DVCPro HD with FW 400. In fact, just did a one hour demo at the local Apple Store playing DVCPro HD material off the FW 400 drive using a 15″ MacBook Pro. Not what I would recommend, but it does work.

Sounds more like it’s setup related to me. Something doesn’t match on your end.
