Hello,

when I playback my sequence, or try to lay it off to Beta, I am repeatedly getting an error/ dropped frame message prompt and the sequence stops transferring or playing. The only thing that helped with this problem was when I exported a full quicktime movie and then re-imported that into a new project and timeline.

Does anyone know why I might be getting dropped frames when I try to playback or layoff my original sequence. I still have a good amount of disc space left and I’ve already tried switching to unlimited RT. Is there another setting or something that may help to alleviate this problem when working with my original edited sequence.

You did not provide very much information. In the future please realize that the quality of the responses you will get here are directly related the qaulity of the information you provide.

I’m assuming you’re playing off of an 8-bit timeline, is that correct? What type of drive array are you using?

My timeline setup is AJA Kona LS- NTSC 8 bit to DVCPro50

Sequence Preset: AJA Kona LS: 525 29.97 DVCPro50
Capture Preset: AJA Kona LS: 525 29.97 DVCPro50
Device Control preset: AJA Kona LS: 29.97 Sony VTR
Playback Output Video: AJA Kona 525i29.97 8 bit (720 x 486)
Playback Output Audio: AJA Kona
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Video: same as playback
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Audio: same as playback

I am using two external drives: a 500 GB G-Drive and a 500 GB Lacie, both running off firewire 800. The computer I’m using is a Power Mac G5 with an ATI Radeon 9650 graphics card, and FCP 5.0

Jason,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. A single firewire drive is not fast enough to provide the sustained throughput necessary to playback 8-bit uncompressed. This is why you are having your issues. When you export to a self contained 8-bit file that has much lower overhead than attempting to playback off a timeline with mulitiple tracks of audio and video, but it still cannot playback without dropping frames. At a minimum you need to stripe two drives together to get the necessary throughput for 8-bit video.
