Dropped frame error

It means FCP can’t read the footage on your hard drive fast enough to play back the footage in real time without skipping frames. This is not damaging to your media, but can be annoying when you’re trying to work.

A few basic things to keep in mind:

Your media should not live on you computer’s system drive. Your footage (in fact, all media for your projects) should live on its own hard drive, but a RAID is ideal. Even a G-RAID is sufficient for compressed formats.

Change your RT settings to Unlimited if you have to.

It’s good practice to match all your media and timeline settings. If you have to convert things in Compressor before editing, do it. And don’t work with H.264 files. Convert them to ProRes

I have set it to unlimited RT & the files are in apple pro res 422 & dv pal codec, all are mov files. All the media is in my internal hard drive (not on that where i have applications).

Except all of this sometimes i get the error of dropped frame.

Can you you tell me why it occurs in between sometimes?

Unless you’re on a Mac Pro and you’re media is on an extra internal drive, take your media OFF the internal drive. Your media should live on a hard drive or RAID dedicated to storing your media files.

Like I said, it happens when FCP can’t read the files from your storage device fast enough to play back the footage in real time. Next time FCP gives you the warning, simply mark the checkbox that says “Do not warn again.”
