  • Drop Shadow missing, importing AE file into FCP

Posted by James Mulryan on June 2, 2009 at 2:58 pm

    Hello All:
I am loosing my drop shadow when bringing in a qt movie generated by AE

    Here are my settings
    DVCPROHD
    Animation
    channels: rgb + alpha
    depth: millions +
    color: straight (unmatted)

Text looks great in FCP, but no shadow.
Can anyone tell me what I am missing?
    Thank you.

I don’t think that the DVCProHD CODEC supports an alpha channel. Try the Animation CODEC at 92% quality setting.

I think James means his Comp is set as DVCPRO HD. He mentions he exported QT Animation with RGB+A (why 92 percent?)

James: Are you compositing this over anything other than FCP’s default black background?

Thanks for jumping in Adolfo, I thought he had rendered with the DVCPro HD CODEC.

I suggest a quick check within the Comp Panel to check if the correct (desired) Alpha Channel is visible prior to rendering.

I’ve used 92% for the Animation CODEC for as long as I can remember and it’s served me well. Off course, uncompressed is preferred if storage isn’t an issue.

    Cheers

    Thanks all
    Yes using animation setting.

Using this comp as a graphics overlay on FCP DVCPROHD timeline. live action, not over black.

Hate using DVCPROHD as an editing format, but my Matrox MXO and MacBook Pro will not handle Pro Res.

Changed the straight matte to premultiplied, and now drop shadow is coming through.
Looks a bit rough. Maybe my shadow is too thin.

You may need to change the alpha type in Final Cut Pro.
Right Click on clip > Modify > Alpha Type > Black
