Hi, I wanted to create a effect where I had several videos playing in screen at once, I have done this by scaling each video down and layering them on top of each other in different parts of the frame. I have also placed a white rectangle underneath to create a frame like background to the clips. I was wondering if there was anyway in FCPX that I can give the scaled down clips a drop shadow effect so the drop shadow lands on the bottom layer (the white rectangle)

    Thanks

    Is this of any help?

Ripple Training made this available for free.

Unbelievable Apple, still a year and a half into FCP X, doesn’t have a way of putting a drop shadow on a video.

Hey now, it’s only been a year and 3 months. These things take time.

That’s why doubts about their commitment start to creep in to my mind…

I would recommend going to https://www.fcpeffects.com. You can download their free Drop Shadow effect and they have many more great effects for FCPX!

I like the one from Ripple training. The FCP Effects one works, but it’s default settngs are bizarre.

BTW, all these 3rd party drop shadows are displaying what is obviously some sort of flaw in FCP X’s processing. The drop shadow added by these filters can’t escape the boundaries of the original clip. IOW, if you add a drop shadow to a video clip that is simply scaled back, you won’t see it. That’s why they all have a scale feature. You have to scale back the object, then scale it back up in the transform tools.

But for some reason FCP Effects filter adds a second blurry image behind and scales your image way back for you. Strange. But does all sort of other cool things.
