    Hi guys good morning !

    I’m going to the forum because I don’t know what to do anymore.

    I’ve been trying to solve the Drop Frame problem for over a year now when using 4K 30/60 videos within the première. My point is not to reduce playback quality or proxy because then I don’t see much point in building a good PC for editing, spending money on a good video card and then having to lower the quality or having to proxy, but let’s situation and file types:

    Recording Devices: DJI Osmo Pocket, Panasonic LX100, Panasonic GX85
    Fps: 30-60
    Resolution: 4K (3840×2160)
    Codec: MP4
    Duration: 1 to 8 minutes
    Playback Quality: Maximum
    My monitor resolution: 4K with upscalling to 175%
    Processors tested: Ryzen 1600, 1700, 2700, 2700x, 3600 and Intel i5 9600k
    Motherboard: Several tested
    Video Card: GTX 1070 Ti
    Memory: 64gb DDR4 between 2400 Mhz to 3000 Mhz
    Discs: 2 SSD M.2 NVME x4
    Premiere: All versions of Pro (current 13.1.3 – Build 44)

    Procedure:

    I upload the video to the timeline
    I apply a layer of Lumetri
    I apply a transition effect like Cross Zoom

    READY … Just enough for the video to start crashing when playing back playback …

    Already tried to change driver, reinstall windows, install codec package but nothing ….

    It’s been over a year since I changed configuration several times going through AMD and then returning to Intel which they say is better in the case of Premiere and nothing ….

    Does anyone have any idea what it might be or some test I can do to try and solve this? It is not possible that anyone working with 4K files inside the premiere cannot fluently edit with a PC as described.

    If anyone can help, I appreciate it.

    4K…60p….MP4. There’s a lot going on here.

    First…for 4K 60p you need FAST FAST hard drives to play that back. Not a single SSD…but a RAID of drives. You need SPEED to play that back…

    But then…second…MP4. Compressed codec that takes a lot of system resources to decode on the fly. 4K 60p MP4? You seem to have enough for the decoding part, but the drive speed might be an issue.

    Try transcoding the MP4 to an editing codec, like DNxHR…or ProRes 422 if on a Mac. How does playback work then?

    The marketing juggernaut of camera manufacturers has helped create a lot of misinformation about acquisition formats and the use of these formats in editorial.

    H264 media should always be transcoded to an edit friendly codec-i.e., Cineform, Prores or DNxHD/R.

    So, but in this case, imagine that I will have to have a good pc to do these conversions .. it is not specifically a proxy but similar to the issue that I will have to waste a long time to transcode to DNxHR if using windows. It really is a lot of work … I figured it was something on my PC but I realize that the problem is really the Long GOP files … I had sold my AMD and I returned to Intel because on Puget Systems’ own site comment that Quick Intel Sync helps hardware accelerated decoding and I still have the same problem.

    As already mentioned you need to calculate the drive speed required to pull that data off your drives. UHD (its not actually 4K its UHD) is 4 times the bandwidth of HD and at 60P that’s double 29.97fps so you are asking for 8 times the media to move from the drive for a single stream of video have a dissolve and that’s 16 times the data bandwidth.

    Then that’s coupled with needing to decode MP4 in real time. To playback and do any sort of effect you have to decode the heavily compressed MP4 to uncompressed media then do the colour correction calculations and then render up the result for realtime playback.
    You didn’t mention you Graphics GPU choices and these would need to be matched to work best with Premiere and take as much of the workload away from the CPU.

    All of which is a very tall order. To edit in realtime at that sort of quality is going to need a much higher spec setup.

    And that’s why people don’t really work that way. and why offline online was created.

    Batch transcode to an editable quality is often done on a second lesser machine in parallel with the edit starting. That can make viewable outputs for approval

    The final online is only the media needed so transcoding from MP4 to a workable edit codec like ProRes or DNxHR isn’t much work at all.

    Or transcode to an editable codec early on and direct online.
