Not sure if any of you have discovered that Resolve yet doesn’t support Drop Frame EDLs as it seems like everyone is working at 24 (23.98) or is in PAL land. I’m sure that drop frame EDLs are near the top of the list of issues that the team will address but since 97% of my work is broadcast for USA distribution like Discovery and Nat Geo I have to go with drop frame.

Almost always I receive a master QuickTime and and EDL from a client or I receive a FCP project with the QuickTime cut up on a sequence for me to produce an EDL from. I then use the Preconform option in Resolve to bring the project in

So I thought I’d share a little work around that I’ve tested and started to use and another Resolve colorist here in DC doing similar work has used.

    1. If you have an DF EDL load that into FCP with the reconnect option everything should be sliced up (I’ve been reconnecting the media to the file on disk but I don’t think that step is completely necessary). Go to Sequence > Settings > Timeline Options and disable drop frame next to starting timecode. If you have an FCP project do the same thing but you can skip the step of importing the EDL obviously.

    2. Re-Export the EDL which should now be NDF (btw from FCP I’ve found using Generic Edits the most reliable option with Resolve)

    3. In Resolve add the QT as your normally would to the media pool and on the conform tab choose Preconform and choose the new NDF EDL. Grade normally

    4. Render the show as one QT from Resolve using the Target option from the Render window.

    5. Reimport that QT back into FCP and place it on a DF timeline output to tape, file add titles etc etc.

I’m sure there are other adaptations of this (like using scene detector) and perhaps something I’m missing inside of resolve to handle the issue but I couldn’t find a solution inside of the app. This workaround has been working though with the only gotcha of a missing reel name in the FCP EDL but since its one QT file I’m working with this hasn’t been an issue for me. Also I know that many people (myself included) would like to go back to tape directly from Resolve but I couldn’t figure out a way to produce a DF master directly from Resolve.

If anyone has additional ways to workaround this issue I’d be very interested.
