Anyone here have any experience using Drobo for backup of Sony Vegas files? Setting up a RAID does not appeal to me and the Drobo seems to be an alternative worth considering.

I wouldn’t use a Drobo unless it were a gift. Nothing technical, but it’s still a proprietary RAID box. I can build my own RAID box a lot cheaper and with better capacity than a Drobo.

That said, why do you even think you need a Raid/Drobo? Terabyte disk drives are hovering right around a hundred-dollars, and I can put quite a few projects on one drive, then put them in the closet for storage. (Egghead recently sold some for $39 after rebate).

3Tb disks will be on the shelves in just a few months and 4Tb can’t be far behind them.

Thanks for the feedback Steve. I have been burned by “single disk failure” in the past and am wanting to hedge against such a possibility going forward. I have multiple 1Tb drives that I am using now but still have the single drive failure issue nagging at me. I spend A LOT of time now copying from one drive to another just to negate my fears. I realize the Drobo is just a proprietary RAID rig but if I am going to commit to ANY kind of RAID setup, then it kinda becomes proprietary at that point anyway methinks. Perhaps when the 3 & 4 Tb drives hit the shelves I can just automate my back-ups to multiple drives. I hate to sound like a worry wart, but I can still remember that sick, sinking feeling when I lost all the stuff on the drive I lost a few months back. Not a good feeling. Thanks again for the reply.
