Activity Forums Storage & Archiving Drives to Update MacPro Internal Raid 1TB Drives

If you’re RAIDing them all together, then none of them. They’re all “desktop” drives and not meant to run in RAIDs. I do have 4 Caviar Blacks in my Mac Pro, but they’re older from when Blacks were part of WD’s RAID offerings. I don’t know what they’ve changed so they’re no longer recommended for RAIDs. They would probably be fine, but the other 2 might have issues like spin down. This has been discussed on this forum, but my go-to are HGST Ultrastars

If you’re not RAIDing them together, then those should all work fine.

let me make this simple Peter –
just like Eric said, these are cheap desktop drives. It sound like you are going to create a RAID inside your Mac Pro. This drive array will ultimately fail, you will ultimately lose your data, and your clients will get pissed off. I can see from your background that you have used wonderful equipment like the GVG 141 linear edit controller. You know exactly how much that cost. Things today are a tiny fraction of what they once were, but you can’t expect to find the cheapest crap out there, and actually make a living out of it, without having failures. Even the best drives fail, and every drive array, even the most expensive ones require backup. By choosing the cheapest crap you can find, you are just accelerating the failure rate.
