In this tapeless age where we all rely on external hard drives, my question is about wear and tear. Conventional wisdom wise, for a day of editing, is it better to leave an external drive on for the day even if you may take a couple of hours off here and there– or should you shut the drive down when you take a long break and spin it up when you are ready to get back to work? Which is more wear and tear on the drive? My LaCie drives spin down and go to sleep when idle for a while, so maybe leaving them on is better. Not an earth shattering issue but curios.

    Thanks.

With all things electronic, the hardest action on the device is turning it on and off. Cold to hot.. Damp with condesation to warm and dry. They’re made to run.

I used to leave my systems on all the time until the cost of electricity climbed to unreasonable levels. Now I turn everything off at the end of the day.

By shutting down my home office overnight I save about $100 in electricity a month. Usage dropped from a peak of 40 kilowatt hours/day to 25 kwh/day.

Almost half of it is probably the air conditioner.
