  • Drive recommendations for raid?

I’m building a RAID-6 array around a Proavio EB800MS and an Areca 1223. As for the drives, for the past decade or so I’ve been using Hitachi Deskstars for my single use general drives and Ultrastars for my RAIDs. I’m looking at the listings for the 7K3000 and 7K4000 series drives and I see that some listings are Hitachi and others are the new HGST which is a Western Digital division. Can someone fill me in on how the HGSTs compare to the original Hitachi branded drives?

Before buying anything, ask Proavio for the drives they recommend.

For the record, companies like Proavio test systems with certain parts, and stand behind those systems when customers use those parts. Stray beyond those that are tested and recommended and you’re on your own.

    Hi Jonathan,

Yes, I received your email. Thank you for your prompt replies both here and via email the past couple of days.

So I’ll go with the HUS (SAS) version of the HGST Ultrastars. Can you help source the SAS version of the drives? I took a look at the offerings at newegg but they are all SATA.
