Hi All. I have a client that has been supplying 1TB LaCie FW800 drives to use for the projects we cut for him. We do about 10-12 project per year, and each project gets its own drive. We’ve been working with this client for a few years, and as you can imagine, those LaCie drive, in their boxes, are taking up quite a bit of space (they’re pretty pricey too).

My client has mentioned switching to 3.5″ internal drives used externally in an enclosure. Ideally, the enclose will have multiple connections (eSata, FW800/400) so that we can use it on our various machines (Mac Pros, MacBook Pros, iMacs) without having to buy additional cards. Also, it must be configurable as JBOD.

We mostly cut XDCAM EX and ProRes422 for this client. More demanding formats are put onto on our existing RAID, so RAID options aren’t a concern for the enclosure.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

I’ve had good luck with Firmtek enclosures.
I too have clients with their own drives for archiving.I’ve started using this handy little dock from Other World Computing. It has FW400/800 eSATA and USB connections. Drop in a bare drive and you’re off and running. I usually edit using one of the RAID’s and after the project is finished, I use Media Manager to copy all of the assets to the archive drive. Pretty simple and it works.
