I need to know how to draw/write on a alyer to reveal an underlying layer; like a transition. Have tried the write-on effect, but it doesnt really do the trick.

    Any suggestions?

Another way would be to make a solid layer, use it as a track matte, and then animate a paint stroke drawn on the track matte layer.

Me thinbks it’ll be much easier to draw the mask over te same layer and then use Effect>Stroke with Reveal Original Layer.
