  • Drawing tangent to arc in splines?

    Hi,
is there a way to draw tangents to arcs while drawing splines, as in picture below? I know I can round corners with Chamfer but this way I can’t have precise geometric control (tangent handles, center of arc etc.).
Related questions: when I use a spline as a guide and Snap Settings set to Spline to help me modeling, and I move a point along e.g. X axis, the point snaps to the guide spline also moving in Y direction. Is there a way to constraint the snap only along the axis I’m actually moving?
Is there a better tool for drawing splines and import them in Cinema 4D (I don’t like Illustrator)?

    Thank you

You should turn on tangent snapping in the snap settings. So first you would create the circle splines. Then go into linear spline drawing mode and turn on tangent snapping. Draw your linear spline close to the two circles and then, in points mode, move the linear spline’s end points around the circle splines. Tangent snapping should snap them into the correct position.

That said, I generally do this sort of mechanical line drawing in Rhino 3D. I’m sure other CAD applications are also quite good for this.

Thank you, very useful, as always, and the Rhino tip too.

    Hi,
I dont see “tangent snapping” in the snap settings. I am running R15, so possibly it has been moved since this thread started, but I have to say I dont remember seeing there in any previous versions.

any idea where tangent snapping is these days?

Well, actually I never saw a tangent snapping and never figured out a way to draw tangents in c4D, I’m afraid. I guess Adam was explaining how to do that in Rhino
