I have several text layers and want to apply preset animate in’s to them, but each at a different start time. When i drag the presets on to the layers, however, AE always places the effect at the beggining of that layer. How can i get it to apply the start of the effect to the position on the time line where i am dropping the presets?

It depends on the kind of preset. Sone work using Expressions which automatically run from the start of the layer. You can change this “start point” but it requires a working knowledge of expressions.

Work around: Split the layer where you want the effect to start and add the preset to the second part of the split.
