  • Downscaling Disaster Advice Please ;(

Hello everyone, so my BluRay project went smoothly the quality and audio along with visual effects was excellent. I assume the BluRay where set in 1080p quality.

Now I have encountered the biggest problem ever. I was hoping to create DvD versions of my projects using Dual Layer Disc which hold 8.5GB.

Using Adobe Encore I’ve burnt my BluRay project onto DvD and it has been a disaster. The quality, visual effects along with audio is not great, actually it sucks really bad. But when I looked at the file size of the DvD it was only 4.8GB?

I really need some advice, is there a way to downscale 1080p to 720p and then burn 720p onto DvD?

I would really appreciate any help.

    Thank you very much.

.mts supports AVCHD DVD-5 or 9 discs although they cannot be played in a standard DVD player, but can be played in many Blu-ray Disc players as long as the bitrate is below 18 Mbit/s.

most blueray players support AVCHD at 1080p(including ps3) so you don’t even need to worry about downscaling.
Just use a burning preset called bluray compatible AVCHD. some players even support .mp4 via network or usb disk,
    yep…usb disk 🙂

Hello Chris Wright, thanks for you’re response. My client wanted DvD format because some of his friends and families do not have BluRay player.

now if you want to hand out dvd player disks, use a third party frame scaler to 480p, then burning out a dvd-9 compliant with constant bitrate 8,500 Mbit/s(total should not go over 10 with audio, subs) to get best quality.

    1. Apple Compressor works good for rescaling

    2. a free plugin
    https://sites.google.com/site/katisvideotoolbox/smooth-bspline-scaler
use with crosscale pixel bender accelerator to load pbg file if you’re newer than cs5.5

    3. trial$

    4. red giant instant hd

p.s. remember to deinterlace before scaling if you have interlaced footage!

Hello, thanks for your recommendations. Just did some quick research and looks like Reg Giant Instant HD looks to be reasonable. I’ll be purchasing the plugin, I hope it’s an easy plugin to use.

Have you used any of the plugins you have mentioned before?

I’ve purchased Reg Giant Instant HD, how do I use the plugin?
Sorry for asking silly questions just that I usually use Sony Vegas. I only use Adobe Effects & Adobe Encore when it comes to authoring.

BD and DVD has different file structure, you can use some converters to convert your files into VOB, and in most converters , there are adjust settings for users to up or down their parameters
