  • Downconverting HDV… just a quick question

Whenever I edit anything in HDV, I always put it back to tape first then bring it back into my system via downconverting from the camera (yes, I know there’s a way to downconvert it in compressor, but everytime I tried it looked like crap… that will be my next post’s topic). However, I have the settings in the camera (Sony Z1U) to downconvert as “letterboxed” (the other choices are “squeeze” and “edge crop”). I set my timeline to DV NTSC anamorphic which gives me the correct aspect ratio. However, when I add the footage captured, it puts it into the timeline as 4:3 letterboxed footage. I’d love to know what I’m doing wrong. I need it to come in as SD 16:9 footage, and go into my 16:9 timeline without needing to be rendered. Thanks for any help!

You want to downconvert with Squeeze. When you downcovert with Letterbox, it will “letterbox” the footage in 4×3. Squeeze should give you a proper 16×9. Try one clip and see. I’d admit, their wording is awkward, but I think Squeeze is what you want.
