    Hey guys,
I have a client who is shooting with an EX3 in 1080/50i. When he downconverts the footage in Final Cut, it looks really bad. What, if anything, can be done with his FCP settings to make the downconverted product look good? I know this is super general so if asking me more questions about his setting will help come up with an answer, ask away!

Downconvert for what purpose? SD TV, Web, DVD, etc.
Viewing how? Computer monitor, HDTV, SD Broadcast Monitor, DVD playing back to one of the previous, file in a player (which one)?

For such a general question all I can give is a general answer. Use Compressor and make settings appropriate for you target viewing medium.

He is downconverting it and sending it via FTP for SD TV broadcast

Heck I do that all the time. I shoot HD and FTP an SD MPEG2 Program Stream to DGFastchannel for local cable. There are several workflows. What I do is edit the HD source in an SD timeline. When I drop 1080i60 into SD timeline and examine the clip you’ll notice that Final Cut Pro adds a field flip filter. SD timeline should be ProRes or Uncompressed. If they’re choosing DV it’s going to take a more significant quality hit.

An actually suggestion would depend on your clients exact workflow though.

Issues to be aware of HD Progressive vs HD Interlace (upper field) source.
Editing in HD vs SD timeline.
Downconverting in FCP vs Compressor (or Episode).

Some issues might be field flipping issues when going from HD interlaced to SD interlaced
    Codec downconverting to.
Key is the SD interlaced downconvert should be QC’d on an SD Broadcast monitor.

We need to give them a DV Pal interlaced quicktime file. We are shooting in 1080/50i. When we downconvert it here it looks good but by the time it gets to them via the FTP (quicklink)it comes out with a lot of motion jitter.
