I am using a JVC BR-HD50 deck to digitize footage shot in PAL HDV format (16:9) on a Sony Z1U. I want to down-convert in letterbox SD (720 x 576 with black bars on top and bottom) but it captures in full screen rather than letterbox. In other words it crops off the sides (sacrilege!) I am used to using the Sony down-convert function in their HDV cameras to get this output, but it seems that JVC decks do not provide that functionality….?

Defeated, I decided to go ahead and capture in HDV format to 1280 x 720, but it won’t work that way either. I use an easy setup in Final Cut Pro for HDV 1080i50, and I get the capture screen okay. Then I can roll the tape deck by clicking the play button, but I don’t get a picture in the capture screen. And I can’t stop the deck unless I use the button on the deck (FCP’s remote button in the capture window works for play but not stop). Weird.

    Must be the user…

The BR-HD50 does not support 1080i HDV streams from canon or sony.

    I wish it would.
