Using Render > Stroke: when Spacing is 80% to 100% (with brush harness at 100% = crisp dots)you get dots (and down to 50% if the Brush Harness is 0%, but the dots are way fuzzy).
But my fav for dots, and it gives you more spacing options, is using Render > Audio Waveform.
Just put this on a solid or whatever layer you want, no audio layer required (and hence no jump with the beat).
Render > Audio Waveform
Path > Mask 1 (your mask, you can make this path with the Pen Tool (G))
Display Option > Analog Dots, gives you nice 2 color dots (for 1 color, use the same color for Inside Color and Outside Color), like a radial gradient, beautiful for larger dots. Cutting down on the “Number of Displayed Samples” lets you crank up the “Thickness” to get really big dots, this is much more flexible than Stroke.
