I created a CG sign to go on the front of a glass door that swings shut. I did a number of tracking attempts on it, did some scaling and some other things…all day…and am out for the count. Okay, maybe just stumbled to my corner where the awesome CC team is there to rub my shoulders back to life.

This door is outside and is glass, which means reflections of people and cars are moving across the glass making it impossible to get a good track on anything other than the door handle, which didn’t work that well because of the need for 3D space. I’ve done so many tracking attempts today, I finally gave up and did it by hand…and we all know how good an eyeballed tracking shot looks. I ended up using a combination of scaling, 2 nested tracks on position, eyeballing, and puppet tool to get the sign to look right. It took way too long. Is there a better way? A tool I’m not aware of? A standard? …A gun?

I now have to do the same thing with another shot with people coming out of the door and walking in front of the sign. Some rotoscoping I suppose…but all those arms and heads…three people…seems like a nightmare all over again.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks to all of you,
    Eric

Make the sign a 3D layer, move the pivot for the layer to the left side of the door where the hinges are, then position the sign back in the middle of the door, leaving the pivot off to the side. Now as the door opens and closes you should be able to use your X rotation channel to move the sign with the door, replete with perspective changes, without doing any painful manual tracking. That said, I don’t know if there is a way to compensate for various camera lenses in AFX, out of the box.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks Dustin,

I did that and got it to work that way, but the camera is moving around a lot and the perspective isn’t exactly working for putting the Anchor point on the hinge. The door is also moving inconsistently so it’s really hard to get the sign to not have that floating around look.
