Don’t throw out your Tower Mac Pro
We’ve been updating a few of our Mac Pro 4,1 and 5,1 systems to modernize them. A new goody that we’ve located is from a company called “Icy Dock”. it’s their “EZConvert Lite MB882SP-1S-3B Light Weight Open Air 2.5″ to 3.5″ SATA SSD/HDD Converter/Mounting Kit” and it has finally provided a stable 2.5″ to 3.5″ adapter that actually works with the Tower Mac Pro’s mounting trays for hard drives. In these, we’ve added the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSDs as a 3 drive RAID-0 striped array. It’s only 3TB, but it’s bloody fast at almost 1.6GB/sec sustained throughput (that’s gigaBYTES, not gigabits)
In addition to the 32GB of Transcend RAM and the Nvidia Quadro 4800 from YoYoMarv on eBay that we added, we’ve returned these aging Mac Pro units to full usefulness for editing and transcoding using Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder, FCP X, Motion, Compressor, Squeeze, and Media Composer. Our mid-range Mac Pro canisters slightly edge them out on a couple of render tests in AE, but the savings involved is easily worth the 5% or so.
