I’m creating video with an alpha layer to composite into FCP. I’ve got the base layer in FCP, but I am using the image in AE as a guide as well. When I render, I have to remember to “turn off” the background guide layer, so I can composite correctly in FCP. The problem is, I keep forgetting to turn off the guide layer and the re-rendering is killing me.

Is there a way to set a background layer NOT TO RENDER, regardless of whether it is visible or not?

select the layer that you are using as a guide in your comp. then go to the layer menu, select ‘guide layer.’ now, unless you’ve changed the ‘best settings’ in your render settings, it won’t render. if you click the render settings you can see the setting for guide layers (normally set to off).

I think this was introduced in AE7, so if you’re working with 6.0 or 6.5 you’re out of luck…

Nope, AE 6.5 brought us this “revolutionary” feature. ;O)
