I need to get the Dolby E file decoded and encoded back to Dolby Digital 5.1 from an HDCAM tape. I’ve got the DP572 Dolby E decoder box and the DP569 encoder box. I’m using FCP 6.0.6 and a Black-Magic capturing card with SPDIF/AES input. But I can’t seems to get the FCP to Capture the Dolby Digital 5.1. Are there any other software i’ll have to purchase to make this work.

Is it that you cannot get all the tracks? There is a setting in the log and capture window’s Clip Settings tab to select the number of tracks you want to capture. Is this the problem?

What I’m trying to do is capture the Dolby Digital 5.1
that is coming out of the DP569 Dolby Encoder box in FCP.
But all I’m getting is noise.

Dolby E is just data at full level so it sounds like noise. When it is decoded to six discrete tracks you will need to input via the Decklinks AES inputs 1-6.

If you are just making a compile or not needing to change the audio, you can edit the Dolby E data along with the pictures and the stereo track that was on 1&2 of the HDCam

At the moment I’ve got one output from the DP569 encoder box that I plug in to the one input SPDIF/AES of the Black Magic card.
When I plug the cable in to a stand alone amp you can hear the Dolby Digital 5.1 playing on all speakers, but try and play it with FCP you only get the noise. I need to fined a way to capture the Dolby Digital 5.1 out of the DP569 encoder box with FCP to use in DVDSP for authoring

I am not sure what you are trying to do here Devan. My guess is you are capturing an HDCam tape in order to author a DVD and that tape has DOLBY E on channels 3&4.

If so, here’s what you need to do. The DP572 decoder will output AES signals via the BNC connectors on the rear panel. There are four connectors which will output stereo digital signals in the AES/EBU format. You will need six channels (3 of the BNC connectors) to feed the decoded data into a capture card. You say you have a Decklink. Last time I looked, there were about seven different Decklink cards, many with multiple digital inputs that can take the three stereo AES/EBU digital outputs from the Dolby E Decoder. If your card has these inputs, you then capture the picture and sound into FCP using Log & Capture. Go to the tab in Log & Capture that lets you select how many audio tracks you want to capture and set to six.

In your Decklink software, select AES/EBU inputs instead of embedded SDI.If you don’t have a capture card with enough inputs, then you can’t do this job. Don’t try to capture all six tracks by doing a stereo capture three times as you will not be able to maintain absolute phase accuracy. You must capture all six tracks simultaneously.

Once you have captured image and the six channels, you can use Compressor to make both the m2v file for picture and the built in Dolby AC3 encoder to make the audio data stream for DVDSP. The DP569 encoder is not useful to you. It needs software on the host computer to take the data output and make an ac3 file that is compatible with DVDSP. As this encoder is already built into Compressor, this box is redundant for your needs.

The most straight forward thing to try first is to get AES (uncompressed) audio out of 572 and into FCP. It looks like you need something with 6 to 8 AES BNC inputs. The AJA IoHD has this.

Yes, as was mentioned, you need to identify exactly which Black Magic card you have and what breakout cable connectors it offers.

Here’s a chart for Deck Link:

Good luck! Please let us know if you get this working to your satisfaction!

It looks like I’ve got the Decklink HD Pro with only one SPDIF/AES input
What i need to know now is if i buy the AJA IoHD will this sort my problem out. Will I be able to use the AJA IoHD box with the DP572 capturing the 6 audio tracks with FCP

I’ve heard that Black-Magic has very helpful people on the phone. You should give them a call.
They might be able to get you a different breakout cable.
Also, I think they have a Black-Magic forum here on The Cow. Ask people what you need to get 4 BNC’s / 8 Channels of AES input.

I haven’t had to try exactly what you’re doing, but the IoHD is pretty much rock solid and very easy to work with. You can connect a video signal to it in HD-SDI, HDMI, or Component and have that come in with the audio. The AJA Control Panel even offers Timing and Sync control to deal with moving through different components like your 572.

Good luck. Please let us know what happens!

Hi there Jerry my name is Andre Welkin, i find that your response is so effective. I am new at this HDCAM vs Blu-Ray things, this is where the company is heading so i have to get up to speed with it.

Can i ask for advise from start to end on Capturing from Blu_Ray into FCP, and also how do i get all the cahhnels back onto HDCAM including the Dolby E channel.

Does this mean i can print all this to DHCAM from FCP,

    Many thanks in Advance

I’m confused. Capturing from Blu-Ray disks recorded as camera masters?
