doing other things while apple compressor running
Hey,
With years of not really knowing the right answer, and recently having acquired a much larger amount of work to accomplish, I would like a definitive answer to something I’ve always just had a ‘feeling’ about.
I’ve never felt comfortable running anything else on my MacPro (4GB RAM, 2.93 GHz Core Duo) while anything in Final Cut was exporting or while Compressor was doing its job. There were times that videos ended up with glitches, and obviously, having to re-export is a waste of time and a pain.
Therefore, I stopped doing anything else while Compressor/Final Cut were doing their export jobs. Many times, I will work on several projects until they’re done and then leave it to export overnight. However, I forgot to cut some extra material off of one of the files and now I’m having to use Compressor during the day for it, because the deadline is this afternoon.
I have work to do on other things, and being that I’ve never ‘liked’ to work on other things at the same time, I am wary of messing up this render and having to do it over again.
So, now that you have my interesting background, here’s my question: Is it okay to work on other things while Compressor/Final Cut are doing their export jobs? Is it a case-by-case basis and is there a certain rule of thumb to use?
Any insight would be most helpful, as I have lots of work to do and have been setback by having to do a re-render during the workday. Thank you.
