  • Does using the vertical flip and the horizontal flip degrade the video quality?

Posted by Craig Busch on August 13, 2005 at 5:21 am

    Hi,
I am shooting something where I am using a camera stand that requires that I use the vertical and horizontal flip to get things right side and the right direction.
Question- Will this processing of the video- MiniDV- using both vertical and horizontal flip degrade it?
    Thank you

    Well, technically, yes. A little.

The footage will require rendering, and therefore recompression. But I would not consider this enough of a problem to stop you from doing it.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for answering my question. As followup question:
If I could come up with a solution ($) that did not require using the horizontal flip
and the vertical flip, would the saved quality loss- though small- warrant it?
If it is fine as is, I will be happy going with it.
    Thank you again

    Probably not.

    Here is what I suggest.

Shoot something with great lighting, and good colors, and great contrast against the background. Put it on a timeline, flip a copy on the next higher track, and then split screen the two by cropping the higher track to 50% from the left.

Export to the usual media – DVD or whatever – and then make your comparison. Look at both at the same time on the split screen and decide for yourself. Only you can make the decision.

Make sure you put enough on the timeline to give yourself time to decide. A couple of minutes at least. Maybe more. Also do this with the type of material you usually shoot.

I always use the Basic 3d filter for any kind of flip. The horizontal and vertical flip always degrade the quality more than I can tolerate.

    Hi Kevin,
Could you please explain what you do?
    Thank you
